M20 Prism of Focus tries to explains an advanced mage which is defined as a mage with Arete 6+.
Upon completing a Seeking for Arete 6 the player must choose one of three paths: Archmage, Exemplar, or Oracle. Archmage is the most common choice, and Oracle is the rarest. If everyone starts choosing Oracle, this decision will be decided with a staff die roll and weighted appropriately to the three choices. Choosing a path can't be avoided or delayed, or changed in the current incarnation. You will
have to start the path all over again with a new character.
- "Exemplars gain powers that Archmages can only dream of, but it costs them everything. Exemplars align themselves so strongly with a sphere of magick that it replaces their Focus and eventually consumes their individuality."
- "The rarest taken and most difficult, is the path of the Oracles. Few on this path would call themselves Oracles, as Oracles are mages who turn back from ascension to help others follow. However, those who walk this path are walking towards Ascension, some will manage to reach it, and some of those will become actual Oracles. surpass their perspective, grow beyond their Focus, and achieve the enlightenment they believe comes with Ascension."
